History of Azadi tower:

In 1967 there was a competition among the Iranian designers and in the end Hossein Amanat, who was only 24 years old, won and designed the tower. He studied art in Tehran art university.

Starting Azadi tower construction was in November 2nd, 1969 and after 28 months of work in January 14th, 1972 it was finished with the name of Shahyad tower.

For the hard geometry part of the design an engineering company, Arup company, was employed to help the architectures to build the tower. For safety and avoiding the tower to collapse because of earthquake the tower was built in concrete.

Hossein Amanat said that the style and architecture of the tower was inspired by Sheikh Lotfolah mosque in Isfahan but the dome is in a shape of an oval not a circle.

Inside the tower is a combination of modern and traditional design specially the 2nd floors ceiling. In the entrance of the tower each block of the doors have a weight of about 5.3 Ton. The blocks are made of Granit stone.

The tower has two elevators. The first elevator goes to the first two floors and to reach to the cement ceiling, after that you have to use the second elevator. None of the ceilings are closed and they are connected to each other.

One of the famous concert halls is the Azadi concert hall which is under the tower.

This building has 4 elevators with three floors and two stairways. The underground has a museum and gallery library and etc.. The height of this building is 63 meters and its height from the ground is 45 meters and its height from the ground of the museum is about 5 meters.

It is said that for building Azadi tower, about 46,000 rocks were cut and used.

In the ceiling of the tower there is an air hole. In the last floor there are holes around the corners that other than changing the air inside the tower they make the tower look beautiful.

In the opening ceremony of this tower, Mohammad Reza shah and his wife, Farah Pahlavi, went there and Cyrus Cylinder was shown there for the first time.

For remembering the tower its picture was printed behind 200 Rials  money.

The view of Azadi tower:

If you look at the tower from up, you can see its rectangle shape and if you look at it from the front, it looks like an Achaemenid soldier.

Azadi tower is the symbol of the city and a mixture of Islamic and modern design which shows the beauty of Iranian architecture. In this design the architecture has even cared about the order of the stones and at the end of each part together has made the tower.

After the Islamic revolution the name of the square and this tower from Shahyad changed to Azadi.
